Biography

Phelan, a graduate of the George Stevens Academy Class of 2002, is excited to return to GSA to take over for Mr. O after having played in the GSA band program. Following stints studying jazz in New Orleans and education in New York City, as well as travel in Brazil, Europe, and Morocco, he is eager to be back in this neck of the woods to nurture his Peninsula roots. His experience as a student at GSA, and specifically Steve's music program, profoundly shaped who he is today. On the importance of music and creativity and the band room, he says: "I identify as a creative and am most at home in my studio playing with instruments, sounds, and electronics. I'm also a lifelong learner and find the process of collaborating with others and exploring new ideas essential to my growth. I believe each of us has a creative voice that must be nurtured and the wonder we bring to the world as children continues to exist in the form of creative play as we grow up. The band room at GSA is a space that fosters this creative growth in all students and helps them explore how their voices fit together with each other to form a greater composition."
