PRESS RELEASE: George Stevens Academy Completes NEASC Re-Accreditation ProcessReports Now Available to the Public
BLUE HILL, Maine — June 22, 2026— George Stevens Academy has completed its decennial re-accreditation review with the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC), the regional accrediting body for independent schools across New England. Both reports resulting from the process — the school's own Self-Study and the external Visiting Team Report — are now published on the GSA website.
The review, which every diploma-granting school undergoes, examines a school against 14 standards covering academics, governance, finances, student support, health and safety, and long-term planning. GSA began the process in fall 2022 and paused it following the budget shortfall of spring 2023 before resuming in 2024. Over the past two years, every faculty and staff member and several trustees contributed to the committee, research, and writing work, and teams of educators from Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Connecticut conducted two campus visits.
In most areas, the Visiting Team affirmed the school's own assessment. The teams differed on three standards:
Standard 3 (school resources): GSA rated itself as not yet meeting this standard. The Visiting Team raised the rating, concluding that the school's financial planning and oversight reflect meaningful progress toward sustainability.
Standard 8 (student inspiration and support): The Visiting Team raised GSA's self-rating, finding the school's support of each student to be a particular area of strength.
Standard 13 (homestay program): The Visiting Team lowered this rating, identifying the school's newly re-established homestay program as needing more formal structure and policy. GSA had acknowledged this need in its own Self-Study.
The Visiting Team's central recommendations included revising the school's mission and vision statements — work already underway through a collaborative process involving faculty, staff, trustees, and students — and building clearer written procedures and structures across academic, operational, and governance areas, noting that much of GSA's strength currently rests with individuals rather than documented systems.
The Visiting Team also commended GSA's student supports, writing that they help each student "feel seen, transformed, valued, affirmed, and prioritized," and recognized the school's adult community for its “devotion and resourcefulness” through recent financial challenges.
Findings from the review are now informing the school's strategic planning and visioning work, which will be brought to the community for comment in the coming months. Past NEASC reviews have driven significant change at GSA, including the development of its special education program and its advisory curriculum.
