STUCO Vice President, Adie Allen (middle), along with STUCO President, Emily Young (not pictured), made the best of misfortune when Valentines carnations were delayed to weather. They delivered carnations to Parker Ridge (pictured above), Blue Hill Hospital, Blue Hill public Library, then headed to Ellsworth to deliver the remaining carnations to area hospitals and retirement faciltiies.

Way to go, STUCO, for stepping up and spreading love to the community!

GSA brought the heat to Jazz District VI Festival at Ellsworth High Thursday, Feb 12. Three groups brought dynamic sets to the festival that they have been preparing since November. Pavlov's Cats under the direction of Chris Pirsos, wowed the judges with their versions of Misty and Afro Blue, and a rousing arrangement of Mr. PC. Reptilicus Honors Combo busted onto the scene in 5/4 bringing Brubeck's classic, Take Five, before featuring festival veteran Bailey Townsend on the upright bass on Monk's Round Midnight, and finally bringing it home with the chop-buster Spain. The GSA Jazz Band rounded out the day with an energetic set including Syeeda's Song Flute and Mira, Mira featuring fiery solos from a variety of players including Eddie Crownover on guitar and Acadia Simmons on alto. All three groups received 'silver' ratings which means they will progress to the State Festival in March.

All three groups received feedback from the esteemed panel of judges, Dr. Dan Barrett from UMaine Orono, and Brian Nadeau, Maine trumpet legend. We will work hard over the next few weeks to incorporate the feedback and polish our sets before taking them to the State festival at Hampden Academy on March 13 and 14. The Principal’s Award was established in 1984 to recognize students for academic excellence and good citizenship. Each member school names a senior class student as its award recipient. Award winners and their principals are invited to an Honors Luncheon each spring. Each student receives a plaque and lapel pin in recognition of his/her achievement. A minimum of five students, chosen by lottery from a pool of names of those students present at the luncheon, are awarded $1000 scholarships.
