In Mr. V’s Linear Algebra class, students submitted their mid-year projects:

Luke Lamontanaro '28 - Studied a branch of music composition called Serialism, where he used matrix operations to compose five atonal pieces. 

Lorenzo Argentati '27 - Gave a presentation on Singular Value Decomposition, a process used in graphics rendering.

Elizabeth McGaha '26 - Made a poster about Systems of Linear Differential equations, an advanced calculus topic.

Acadia Simmons '27 - Created a model for the growth of cocoapod and whale populations with Leslie matrices. 

Lucas Ladd '26 - Modeled the flow of consumer traffic at the Blue Hill Fair with Markov Chains.

Atticus Greenberg '27 - Applied matrix operations to the Rubik's Cube.

Corwin Allen '28 - Created and analyzed many memes about linear algebra.

What is Linear Algebra?

Linear Algebra is considered one of the most practically useful branches of mathematics because once you can think in terms of multiple dimensions and relationships, you can model incredibly complex real-world systems.

It is either an advanced elective in high school or a first or second-year class for STEM majors in college. IT requires a solid foundation in algebra and abstract thinking.

This screening and discussion will be the first step in an oral history project for GSA audio production students, led by Phelan Gallegher and Galen Koch, where they will interview folks from around the peninsula who were part of the Back to the Land Movement or grew up with the values. Between now and April our panelists, along with four others, will be interviewed and share stories with students to be recorded, culminating in a presentation of the final recordings at the library on April 1. All of the stories will be preserved on Maine Sound and Story - a digital oral history archive.

GSA welding students are currently fabricating new welding tables for the shop.

Senator Max Cook, Class of 2027, was sworn into office as a US Senator at the Maine Congressional Debate State Championships on Saturday, January 17. The championships were held in the Senate chambers in the capitol building in Augusta. As a US Senator for the day, Max debated and voted on bills related to Venezuela, Greenland, Universal Basic Income, PFAS, asylum and deportation policies, and establishing a national holiday on election day.

The rest of the Maine High School State Championships will be held on January 24 at Skowhegan High School. Max will compete there in Lincoln-Douglas debate. Chelsea Smith, Kyra Poitras, Thomas Ingram and Skylar Mendez will compete in various speech categories.

There has been an update in COVID, Influenza and RSV within our community in addition to Strep Throat. Please stay home if you are sick and do not return to school until your symptoms begin improving AND you have been fever-free for at least 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medication. Please consider wearing a mask for 5 calendar days after return to school to protect your classmates, faculty, administration and most importantly YOURSELF!

The Maine CDC and US CDC estimates peak respiratory illness trends for 2025-2026 to mimic the 2024-2025 season with current peak activity to most likely occur in school populations over the next few weeks with the upcoming February Break. COVID cases are overall lower than this time last year with moderate levels of Influenza A in the community. Of course, this information can always change rapidly. 

The Mobile Dental Clinic will be returning Early to Mid-May and will be extending services to staff and administration as well. The last clinic was a success and ran very smoothly. Information will be available to start sign-ups soon. 

We are also welcoming Finding Our Voices for student programming in February regarding teen dating abuse and flyers are available through student advisors and hanging up throughout the campus. CPR classes will be coming in Late February/Early March, so we have much to look forward to and get us through the next cold months.
