• All five GSA jazz ensembles on to state festival

    All four jazz combos and the jazz band at George Stevens Academy earned 1 ratings at the District 6 High School Instrumental Jazz Festival held at GSA on Feb. 27 and will move on to state competition.

         Jazz bands and combos from Brewer, Bucksport, Ellsworth, GSA, MDI, and Shead participated in the competition.

         GSA’s Octessence combo is composed of Gabe Hall on trumpet, Hannah Dyer on tenor sax, Ruby Cossaboon on guitar, Morgan Davis on vibes and piano, Emily Whiting on bass, Bess MacArthur on drums, Amara Birdsall on vocals and Emma Brown on vocals.

         Out Too Late is made up of Meredith Bradshaw Thomas on trumpet, Hunter Sargent on guitar, Juliette Claybaugh on piano, River Muise on bass, Ezekiel Sacaridiz on drums, Adam Matthewson on vocals and Bess MacArthur on alto sax.

         Jam Bake includes Erika Hipsky on alto sax and flute, Courtney Bianco on alto sax, LeeAnn Varnum on soprano and tenor sax, Duncan Howell on trombone, Elana Williamson on vibes and piano, Tess Williamson on piano and vocals, Quinn Stabler on bass and Edward Conte on drums.

         Up Too Early is composed of LeeAnn Varnum on alto sax, Ian Howell on baritone sax, Joseph Mitchell on guitar, Rachel Whitmore on bass, Dawsen Astbury on drums, Asha Kirkland on vocals and Joey Khederian on bass.

         The GSA Jazz Band includes Courtney Bianco on alto sax, Erika Hipsky on alto sax, Margaret Nevin on alto sax, LeeAnn Varnum on tenor sax, Hannah Dyer on tenor sax, Juliette Claybaugh on tenor sax, Ian Howell on baritone sax, Meredith Bradshaw Thomas on trumpet, Danielle Bianco on trumpet, Dawsen Astbury on trumpet, Gabe Hall on trumpet, Haolin Cody Yang on trumpet, Duncan Howell on trombone, Susanna Jakub on trombone, Rachel Whitmore on trombone, Elana Williamson on vibes, Tess Williamson on piano, Quinn Stabler on bass and Edward Conte on drums.

         The Maine State High School Instrumental Jazz Festival, scheduled for Friday and Saturday, March 15 and 16, will take place at South Portland High School.

         Note from the organizers: Click here for a venue map. Parking will be available at South Portland High School, but also at satellite lots at Dyer Elementary School (52 Alfred Street) and the Church of the Nazarene (525 Highland Avenue).
