Phelan Gallagher '02 directs the GSA Jazz Band at the academy’s spring concert in June.

Jazz Band to entertain at Blue Hill Fair

The George Stevens Academy Jazz Band will perform at the Blue Hill Fair for the 27th time on Saturday, Sept. 4, at noon.

But for the first time in the history of GSA jazz, someone other than Steve Orlofsky, who retired in June, will take up the baton for the Grandstand Stage concert. That someone? Phelan Gallagher, a 2002 GSA graduate, who said “I am truly honored and humbled to be taking over for such an inspiring, well-loved educator.”

“I think he’ll do great,” Steve said. “He went through the program. I think the kids related to him in a big way when he conducted them [as part of the job interview process]. He was a jazz major, and he went for his education degree, for a master’s, so I think he’s really got the goods to do it.”

Judging from the eleven-song tentative set list of classics like “Summertime” and “Earth, Wind & Fire,” familiar favorites “Cissy Strut” and “Sing, Sing, Sing,” and a new arrangement of “Careless Whisper,” Phelan is just as comfortable as Steve was at mixing things up musically.
