Drama Club Rehearses for State Festival
Members of the GSA Drama Club were busy rehearsing over the weekend for the upcoming 2021 Maine Drama Festival. This year, the festival will be virtual and non-competitive, with a focus on fun.
The troupe will perform a pared-down version of Henrik Ibsen’s classic “A Doll’s House.” The play, which shocked critics and the public when it was first performed at the Royal Theatre in Copenhagen in 1879, explores the institution of marriage, gender roles, deception, and more, all as Nora Helmer awakens to the reality of her place in 19th-century Danish life.
The cast of the play are Magnolia Vandiver ’21 as Nora Helmer, Jenna Blodgett ’23 as Torvald Helmer, Anna Snow ’24 as Nils Krogstad, Emma Snow ’22 as Mrs. Christine Linde, Rose Kazmierczak ’23 as Dr. Rank, Sofia Lantratova ’22 as Nurse Anne, and Aiden Young ’24 and Thea McKechnie ’24 as Maids.
The set crew are Ava Surgal ’24, Aiden Young ’24, and Haleigh Young ’22.
The costume consultant/designer is Magnolia Vandiver ’21.
Drama Club advisor and play director Erin McCormick ’00 said the group will submit their entry on March 15, and that all the festival performances will be accessible on YouTube.
According to the Maine Drama Festival website, the festival is set to take place on March 19 and 20. More details on exactly how the public can watch the performances will be shared on the group’s Facebook page “soon.” Visit www.facebook.com/medramafest
So, do we say “break a leg” before a virtual performance? How about "Best wishes to the cast and crew for a great show!"
The goals of the GSA Drama Club include having fun, growing as actors, and strengthening their abilities to be truthful, brave, bold, flexible, and supportive on stage or in front of a camera. The club is just one of many ways our students explore their creativity and discover their worlds in the spotlight.
