Eastern Maine Skippers Program
The Eastern Maine Skippers Program is for students who are interested in marine-related careers and prefer a hands-on approach to learning. Through the program, students will learn seamanship skills including navigation, knot tying, and boat handling, scientific research procedures through actual research projects, explore the business world through creating business plans and public speaking so they can speak for themselves at fishing venues such as Dept. of Marine Resources hearings. George Stevens students join students from seven area high schools in a collaborative project each year. This encourages cooperation of future fishermen in our local area. One of the many goals of this endeavor is to sustain the local fishing economy and way of life while responding to changes in the economy, climate, regulations and technology. There will be required travel to all-day meetings with the other schools (3-4 times a year) and attendance at the Fishermen’s Forum is expected.
