Academics Overview

George Stevens Academy provides an exciting array of courses for students in secondary school. Serving as the high school of choice for most of the students in Blue Hill and the surrounding towns on the peninsula, GSA offers a diverse curriculum to prepare students for college or work.

{Coursework} One of only 20 New England Academies that have remained independent schools with a community mission, GSA stands poised to serve as a model of public/private collaboration in the 21st century, a model of excellence without exclusivity.

The GSA strategic plan continues a commitment to serve community students and to meet the academic needs of a wide variety of local students. The Academy also admits boarding students from around the world and private tuition students from Maine and beyond. A target enrollment figure of only 350 students allows us to offer an extraordinary range of academic and extra-curricular offerings, but keeps us small enough to know every student well and encourage strong faculty/student relationships.

Esther Wood’s history of GSA describes an initial school year with only twelve students, but the offerings of that early school included Latin and Greek and also navigation to prepare {Science Experiment} students to fish on the Grand Banks or to sail to the Indies, Europe and China in the 1800’s. Today, GSA very proudly continues that tradition of offering courses with strong intellectual content and courses that provide practical skills. The Program of Studies provides descriptions of courses offered at GSA.

This excellent program would not be possible without an outstanding faculty and staff. GSA is committed to hiring the best teachers and to providing encouragement for them to teach with passion and energy. We strive to continue a tradition of excellence and community involvement that has been a strong element of our long history.
