Grounded in its traditions and commitment to the area's small towns, the Academy is a caring educational community invested in meeting the needs of each student. The Academy offers a challenging, comprehensive program of studies that fosters intellectual inquiry and the pursuit of knowledge, inspires creativity, develops self-reliance, and prepares its graduates for a purposeful life in an ever-changing world. (Mission Statement, approved by Board 7/2007) Paul's Remarks at the Open Annual Meeting, September 22, 2011. Welcome to the George Stevens Academy website. I hope and trust that you will learn everything you want and are seeking about our school community. Please do not hesitate to contact the school directly if we can be of any assistance at all. While you will find this web page filled with information, nothing substitutes for visiting our grounds and meeting our staff and students. I invite you to take the time to tour the beautiful campus and peninsula that we call home. This August, George Stevens Academy opens its doors, as it has since 1803, for another engaging year of learning and growth. Steeped in a rich tradition of educating students from the Blue Hill peninsula, we are an independent learning community that embraces the same elements of intellectual and academic challenge, physical and ethical vitality, inspired care, and purpose it has had since its founding. We strive to inspire young people to stretch their minds and open their hearts so that they may commit to moving out into the world with courage, compassion, respect, confidence and love. Everything we do as a school should move us closer to achieving these ideals. In the end, we aspire to be a school of discovery and mastery and the accompanying skills, sympathies, and habits of mind that are necessary for and come from leading a life of meaning and purpose. We will teach well all students regardless of professed or undiscovered interest, regardless of perceived or unknown talent, and regardless of established or uncovered ambition. My wife Kip and I are very excited to join the George Stevens community this summer. We have three children - Gabriel (consultant in Washington, DC), Jacob (Intern at National Outdoor Leadership School), and Emma (2nd year at Bates College). We look forward to meeting and getting to know the families of GSA students and alums. Please do not be shy in introducing yourselves. I look forward to holding regular "Coffee with the Head" meetings in the fall. Sincerely, {PBP sig} Paul B. Perkinson, Head of School |
